The 2010 matric pass rate is a huge relief, says the Azanian People's Organisation.

"Under normal circumstances, 67.8 percent would not be cause for celebration, but after the downward slide of seven years, the announcement comes as a pleasant surprise and a huge sigh of relief," Azapo said in a statement.

"We also note with appreciation that all provinces have shown an improvement compared to last year."

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced last year's overall pass rate in Pretoria earlier in the day.

It compared favourably to the 2009 pass rate of 60.7 percent.

Azapo noted "with appreciation" that some schools with little or no resources also improved their performance.

"We single out Mbilwi High School from Vhembe Region in the Limpopo Province, and congratulate them as they continue to show the way to other schools."

A source of concern were the so-called dysfunctional schools which showed a pass rate of below 20 percent, Azapo said.

Some 172 schools cross the country obtained a pass rate of 20 percent or less.
