Calling it another example of overreaching legislation, Mississippi First District Congressman Alan Nunnelee says language in a U.S. Senate appropriations bill will cost jobs.

Nunnelee, a Republican, said the Financial Services Appropriations Bill (S 1573) includes language that would ban cords on window coverings. He contends that would lead to the elimination of 80 percent of window covering products and jeopardize thousands of jobs in the U.S.

Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin inserted the language.

"It's just another example of over-regulation by the government," Nunnelee said.

Among those potentially affected would be Hunter Douglas, one of the nation's largest window fashion manufacturers and distributors. The company employs more than 100 people at its facility in Tupelo.

Nunnelee is asking his House colleagues to co-sign a letter he's written to the Financial Services Appropriation Subcommittee. He said the ban was inserted without prior hearings or discussion.
