LUCKNOW: Taking serious note of the kidnapping and murder of four dalit farmers in Moradabad, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said stringent action will be initiated against all those who failed to react promptly to the kidnapping complaint. He also announced ex gratia relief of Rs 3 lakh to the family of each of the four victims, apart from Rs 10 lakh that each of the families would be entitled to under the state government's farmers insurance and compensation for schedule caste and schedule tribe members in case of unnatural death.

Four farmers, including three brothers, went missing on April 30, after they left their home to irrigate their fields in the evening but failed to return home thereafter. A day after the incident, the local villagers approached the local Pakbarda police station to register a complaint against a local history-sheeter Anees. In the backdrop of the kidnapping was the incident that took place on April 15. Anees had allegedly an illicit affair with a middle-aged widow in Gammanpura village under Pakbarda police station.

On April 15, he allegedly entered into a dispute with the woman and thrashed her. While he was publicly thrashing the woman, a local villager Hari Singh intervened. Hari Singh was subsequently joined by other villagers including a brother-trio of Jasvir, Suraj and Vijay.
